Conceived initially as a civic instrument, happened to be in use soon as tool of the political fight and, at last, as additional mechanism with which to eliminate the rivals memory, of the governing evil and, as sublimation of all this, of the emperor and his family. It was a post-mortem conviction consisting of eliminating any track of the existence of the submitted ones to her, trying with it them to lead to the oblivion, to their social death and to their exclusion for the posterity, with the consequent public disgrace. In the historical and geographical context of Rome, the damnatio memoriae was one of the main manifestations of the public sentence processes to which it was surrendering to the prominent figures of the Nobilitas who had incurred serious attempts on the governing beginning of the social order and the good customs, in the exercise of their functions and along his life. Este libro aborda esta figura a lo largo de todo el periodo imperial analizando las fuentes epigráficas, jurídicas y literarias disponibles hasta la fecha y poniendo los resultados de la investigación en correlación con el proceso histórico. Concebida inicialmente como un instrumento cívico, pasó pronto a utilizarse como herramienta de la lucha política y, a la postre, como mecanismo adicional con el que eliminar la memoria del rival, del mal gobernante y, como sublimación de todo ello, del emperador y su familia. Se trataba de una condena post-mortem consistente en eliminar todo rastro de la existencia de los sometidos a ella, intentando con ello abocarlos al olvido, a su muerte social y a su exclusión para la posteridad, con la consiguiente deshonra pública. En el contexto histórico y geográfico de Roma, la damnatio memoriae fue una de las principales manifestaciones de los procesos de condena pública a la que se sometía a los personajes de la Nobilitas que hubieran incurrido en graves atentados contra los principios rectores del orden social y las buenas costumbres, en el ejercicio de sus funciones y a lo largo de su vida.
